Subtitles
Choose subtitle tracks in the player, or save your preferred appearance and automatic-selection behavior in Settings.
Choose a track
- Reveal the playback controls and open Subtitles.
- Select a listed track, or Off.
- For two tracks with a movie or episode, use Style > Dual Subtitles on Apple TV, or Second Track on iPhone/iPad.
- If supported by the connected server, choose Search for Subtitles and select a result to add it.
Search depends on the server’s configured subtitle services. A network share uses subtitle files already present with your media; it does not provide server-based subtitle search.
Second-track support depends on the active subtitles. Image-based primary subtitles can make the second track unavailable, and image subtitles cannot be restyled.
Change appearance
Open Settings > Subtitles and choose Customize subtitle style—under Subtitle style on Apple TV.
Preview changes to text size, font, color, background, and position. In the player, choose Style on Apple TV, or Appearance > Style on iPhone/iPad.
For a different Live TV appearance, enable Use a separate style for Live TV in Settings > Subtitles.
Set automatic choices
Settings > Subtitles also controls when subtitles appear, preferred language, automatic downloads, and SDH preferences for captions with sound descriptions. Remembered per-series choices, including Off, can override automatic rules.
For mistimed text, use the Subtitle Sync clock button on Apple TV or Playback Sync > Subtitle Delay in iPhone/iPad playback options, when available.
